GMRC Reconnecting Rivers

This year, GMRC has reconnected four more streams that had been fragmented by culverts in the Restigouche Watershed. In order to do this, we built rock structures that raised the water back up to the culvert’s level. Re-establishing these lost connections enables juvenile salmon and other aquatic species to access productive upstream cold-water habitat. Faced with the effects of climate change, cold-water fish such as Atlantic salmon will rely more and more on these cold streams for refuge during warm water events.

We would like to thank all who were involved in the project including our contractors and partners from Listuguj Fisheries and Ugpi’ganjig habitat team who came to lend us a hand for this strenuous work!
