The American eel and the Maritime ringlet butterfly

Title

To conduct an ecological assessment between the american eel and the maritime ringlet butterfly in the traditional district of Gespe’gewa’gi

Description

The objective of this project is to take an ecological approach to the research and awareness of the American Eel and the Maritime ringlet butterfly. Such an ecological approach recognizes that all ecosystems are interdependent, and that changes to one ecosystem can impact another. As the Maritime ringlet butterfly is limited entirely to salt water marshes and the American eel migrates from ocean to fresh water. Changes in the salt water marsh ecosystem could inadvertently affect the migration of the American eel.

This assessment of both species in Gespe’gewa’gi will look at the scope of where habitat and migration patterns overlap, helping to build the foundation for a sustainable management plan for the American eel that is sensitive to Maritime ringlet butterfly habitats.
