The Gespe’gewa’gi Institute of Natural Understanding
is a non-profit organization focused on aquatic research.
GINU is governed by a Board of Directors and employs eleven full-time staff. Its member communities include Eel River Bar, Listuguj, and Pabineau.
Core Activities
Core activities include habitat management and stewardship, as well as the research and collection of Mi’gmaq Ecological Knowledge. Research projects include seasonal activities consistent with GINU’s strategic objectives, providing measurable scientific results and reports.
Collaboration & Knowledge
GINU works collaboratively with First Nation governments, organizations, and public and private stakeholders to provide applied scientific knowledge concerning aquatic resources.
Outreach & Education
GINU conducts public and community outreach on aquatic resource management activities, as well as public education efforts to promote awareness and conservation.
Monitoring & Evaluation
Project monitoring and evaluation activities include initiatives and opportunities identified in any given year for ongoing or one-time activities outside of GINU’s core business.
Restoration Efforts
Stream enhancement and restoration activities are conducted annually in partnership with schools, municipalities, and aquatic groups.
