On Saturday, June 27 2015, the GMRC tagged our first eel as part of our current Aboriginal Funds for Species at Risk (AFSAR) project. It was a great day to be outdoors on the field! The sun was finally shining and the American eel was successfully sedated, tagged, and recuperated. After we released the eel, it began to swim off into the distance. We then place our loaned VR100 (thank you to the Atlantic Salmon Federation) into the water and we pinged our eel! The project is off to a great start! The purpose of this research is to better understand American eel behaviour within our watershed. Our activities will monitor eel movements within the Restigouche River estuary and monitor fall migrations using acoustic telemetry.
